Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the data from the chart regarding coffee and tea habits across five Australian cities, the overall summary is incomplete and unclear. In the second sentence, the text trails off incoherently ('and for tea or coffee in cafe, yet the percentage of coffee and tea are high amoung all of three'), failing to present a clear overview of the main trends. Furthermore, many of the figures reported in the body paragraphs lack precision or misrepresent the source data, such as claiming '46% of people for instant' in Sydney when the chart shows approximately 45.5%, or stating '57% for instant' in Brisbane where the chart indicates 53%. The ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on a repetitive listing of data points without adequate comparison or deep synthesis of the information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the text, with attempts to separate information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs using sequencing words like 'firstly', 'Moreever', 'Rather than it', and 'secondly'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing phrasing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the overview and body paragraphs where subjects are omitted, making it difficult to follow which data corresponds to which habit. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is mechanical and inadequate, resulting in a disjointed structure that lacks smooth connections between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to discuss the data using words related to the chart, such as 'residents', 'percentage', 'fresh coffee', 'instant coffee', and 'cafe', but the range is very narrow and repetitive. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text, such as 'people to buying tea' instead of buying, 'people for fresh' instead of buying fresh coffee, and misspelling 'Melbuorne' and 'amoung'. These errors and the limited repertoire cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the communication of precise meaning, restricting the writing to a basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly formed declarative patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to ungrammatical constructions and missing verbs, as seen in 'The given chart present about...' and 'the percentage of people bought fresh coffee...'. There are frequent errors in grammar, including incorrect prepositions, missing articles, and faulty verb forms (e.g., '61% of people goes'). Punctuation and basic sentence boundaries are also mishandled, particularly in the run-on and fragmented clauses within the body paragraphs. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of basic grammatical structures.
