Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the prompt by presenting the data for the three categories across all five Australian cities. The overview effectively highlights the key extremes, such as Melbourne's high café attendance and Hobart's high rate of instant coffee purchases. However, the selection of features tends to list data point by point rather than fully synthesising the broader trends or making deeper comparative statements between categories. Some of the figures mentioned are slightly inaccurate compared to the visual data, such as Brisbane's café attendance which was closer to 55% rather than 51%, reflecting the limitations of a band six response where some supporting details are less precise or under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, a general overview, and body paragraphs addressing specific categories. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moving on to the other category', which help guide the reader through the data. Although some transitions feel slightly formulaic, referencing and paragraphing are managed well, maintaining a coherent overall structure that meets the requirements for this band.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses an adequate and sufficiently flexible range of vocabulary for the task. Less common phrasing such as 'percentage of people who went to a café' and 'figures for people who bought fresh coffee' are employed alongside appropriate statistical terms like 'approximately', 'respectively', and 'similar'. Word choice and spelling are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To reach higher bands, the writer could incorporate more sophisticated paraphrasing and less repetitive reporting verbs, reducing reliance on simple phrases like 'the percentage of people who'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
This criterion is a major strength in the response, showing a wide range of complex sentence structures with the majority of sentences remaining error-free. The student demonstrates excellent control over complex clauses, passive and comparative constructions, and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'followed by Hobart and Sydney, where the percentages were almost the same'). Punctuation and subject-verb agreement are handled accurately throughout, reflecting the high level of control typical of this band.
