Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, making relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities, and providing a clear overview. You accurately identified that visiting a cafe was generally the most popular activity, while buying fresh coffee was the least popular in all locations. Data points are appropriately selected and cited, such as noting that cafe visits reached around 61 percent to 64 percent, and that instant coffee was slightly more common in Adelaide. To reach a higher level, you could extend the comparisons further by grouping cities with similar trends more cohesively, and ensuring that all minor numerical comparisons are fully integrated into the analytical narrative rather than listed sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You successfully organise the text into appropriate paragraphs, starting with a clear introduction and overall summary, followed by city-by-city breakdowns, and concluding with a summary statement. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'Finally'. However, the progression between sentences occasionally feels slightly mechanical due to formulaic transitions. To achieve a higher standard, ensure that referencing is always precise and that cohesive links integrate clauses more smoothly without relying on repetitive sentence-opening structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'significantly higher proportion' and 'least popular choice'. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher band, such as 'parchased' instead of purchased, 'insnat' instead of instant, and awkward phrasing like 'fresh coffee was bought 35% of people' missing the preposition 'by'. To improve, you should focus on accurate spelling of common survey terms and refine your collocations, ensuring that less common lexical items are used with precision and without interference from typographical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are, however, some recurring errors in punctuation and grammar, including missing articles ('went the cafe'), missing prepositions, and spacing errors around punctuation marks. For instance, spaces before commas and full stops are frequent throughout your text. These errors do not impede communication, which places your grammatical control securely at this level. To move up, you should refine your punctuation, ensure subject-verb agreement, and carefully check the omission of essential prepositions in complex sentence patterns.
