Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, presenting an overview and reporting data for the five cities. However, the information is only partially addressed due to noticeable inaccuracies and under-developed ideas. For instance, the text claims that 'Hobart utilized 34% of fresh coffee', which is inaccurate based on the chart (Hobart is approximately 38.5%, while Brisbane and Adelaide are 34.5%). Furthermore, some comparisons lack clarity or precision, such as stating Sydney is the highest 'when compare to other countries' (cities are referred to as countries). To move to a higher band, the student must ensure data points are accurately transcribed from the visual prompt and that all general trends are supported by precise details without factual misrepresentations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an attempt at an overview. However, there is no clear logical progression throughout, and the transitions between paragraphs feel disconnected. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, such as starting paragraphs with 'Moreover' and 'The percentage of fresh coffee acquire by individuals in five cities flcuateted that is Sydeny...' which disrupts the flow of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal organization of sentences lacks coherence. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive ties are used naturally and that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next with clear referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but it contains frequent errors in word choice, form, and spelling that impede communication at times. Examples include 'individual's' instead of 'individuals', 'prefered', 'flcuateted', 'Sydeny', 'acquire' instead of 'acquired', and confusing 'cities' with 'countries'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in awkward phrasing, such as 'utilized 34% of fresh coffee' or 'the use of instant coffee and tea was dropdown'. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of lexical items, pay closer attention to collocations regarding data (e.g., 'purchased' or 'consumed' rather than 'utilized'), and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at complex sentences frequently result in faulty structures and frequent grammatical errors. For example, clauses are awkwardly joined, as seen in 'The percentage of fresh coffee acquire by individuals in five cities flcuateted that is Sydeny purchased the highest percentage...' There are also issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement ('individual's coffee', 'Adelaide has same proportion'), and missing articles. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and improve basic grammatical accuracy.
