Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting data across the five cities and covering the three categories of coffee and tea habits. However, the development of ideas is uneven and contains factual inaccuracies. For example, the student claims that Hobart had cafe attendance at approximately 55 percent when the chart shows it at 63 percent, and mixes up data regarding which city led various categories. While an overview is attempted, it lacks precision. To move toward a higher band, the response needs to select and report key features accurately without misinterpreting the visual data, ensuring that comparisons between cities are reliably grounded in the provided chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, overview, and body details. However, progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as the frequent repetition of transition phrases like 'however on the other hand'. Referencing can also be unclear, making the logical flow feel disjointed in places. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of linking words naturally and ensure that sentences connect smoothly without relying on repetitive transitional formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'behaviours', 'consumption', and 'favourable average'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'illustrators' instead of 'illustrates', 'buyinng', 'coffe', 'Hoart', and 'pupil' instead of 'people'. These errors reflect an inconsistent control of word forms and spelling. To reach a higher standard, the student must expand their vocabulary range and improve accuracy in word choice, spelling, and collocations to ensure precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement problems, awkward relative clauses such as 'nationals, who choose going to cafe', missing articles, and punctuation mistakes. Frequent errors in prepositions and clause structures require the reader to occasionally expend extra effort. To improve, the writer needs to increase grammatical accuracy, pay closer attention to basic sentence architecture, and refine punctuation to produce cleaner, error-free complex sentences.
