Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task by addressing the three main categories across the five cities. It presents a clear overview of the main trends, noting that café visits were generally the most popular activity while fresh coffee was the least popular, and highlights the distinct exception in Adelaide. Data is well selected and compared effectively, such as contrasting the high café attendance in Melbourne, Hobart, and Sydney with the lower figures in Brisbane and Adelaide. Key features are supported with approximate figures from the chart. While some minor data points could be slightly more precise, the overall reporting is accurate and extends ideas sufficiently to meet the criteria well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear overall progression and logical organisation throughout the response. The introduction successfully paraphrases the prompt, followed by an overview paragraph, and then body paragraphs dedicated to each of the three habits. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, using phrases like 'In contrast,' 'Regarding instant coffee,' and 'Notably' to guide the reader through comparisons. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and minor mechanical cohesion issues such as spacing after punctuation prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms like 'percentage,' 'residents,' 'figure,' and 'proportion.' There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary and synonyms, but these are accompanied by frequent spelling and word-form errors, such as 'illisturate' for illustrate, 'Syddney' for Sydney, 'excepts' for except, 'ionstant' for instant, 'closley' for closely, 'coffe' for coffee, and 'diffrent' for different. Additionally, collocation and word choice are sometimes imprecise, for example referring to 'top buyer' instead of the highest percentage of buyers. These lexical and spelling inaccuracies occasionally cause minor strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and spacing errors throughout the text, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Syddney,Melbourne,Brisbane') and a missing space in 'cafe visite ay'. Other grammatical lapses include article omissions and preposition errors, such as 'figure for cafe visite ay' and 'population of people'. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writing from displaying the sustained control characteristic of higher bands.
