Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities. An overview is successfully attempted, noting that café visits dominated while fresh coffee lagged behind. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full clarity, such as the generalized grouping of instant coffee figures and slight inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that 62% of people in Sydney visited coffee shops, whereas the chart indicates 61%. Furthermore, the progression of ideas could be extended with deeper analysis of the relationships between the three categories in each city. To reach a higher level, the response would need to present a fully developed overview and ensure all data points cited align more precisely with the provided chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction and overview to specific body paragraphs comparing the categories. Information is generally organized with clear signposting phrases such as 'Overall', 'Following that', and 'In the contrary'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, starting a sentence with 'While the demand of fresh coffee lagged behind with lowest percentage. However, the purchases for instant coffee...' creates a fragmented structure due to a dangling dependent clause followed by a standalone 'However'. Additionally, referencing could be smoother, and paragraph transitions would benefit from more natural linking devices to improve the overall progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the student to discuss survey results, percentages, and consumer habits using terms like 'consumption', 'dominant', 'demand', and 'population'. There are notable attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'lagged behind' and 'accounted for'. However, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as 'second popular choice' instead of 'the second most popular choice', and 'In the contrary' instead of 'By contrast' or 'On the contrary'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor lexical slips do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary range should be used with greater precision and fewer awkward collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence building with structures like 'While the demand of...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('lowest percentage' instead of 'the lowest percentage', 'at sydney' instead of 'in Sydney'), incorrect preposition use ('over a period of month' instead of 'over a period of a month'), capitalization issues ('Melbourn' instead of 'Melbourne'), and faulty punctuation where sentence fragments are punctuated as complete sentences. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the response and prevent the grammar score from advancing further.
