Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes an attempt to highlight information from the chart, such as mentioning cafes in Hobart, Sydney, and Melbourne at 60%, and instant coffee purchases in Hobart and Brisbane. However, the data reported is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the text claims that 60% of people went to a cafe in Hobart, Sydney, and Melbourne in the last 4 weeks, whereas the chart shows Sydney at 61%, Melbourne at 63.5%, and Hobart at 63%. Furthermore, the attempt to provide an overview is vague and unsupported, as seen in the speculative statement that people visited cafes 'to meet and greet and for calming themselve'. Because the selection of details is partial and contains significant inaccuracies, the task is addressed only partially, placing this criterion at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organisation of the text suffers from a lack of clear progression and structural control. The response is written as a single dense block of text without proper paragraphing to separate the introduction, main body features, and conclusion. While the writer attempts to use sequence markers such as 'On first hand', 'secondly, hand', and 'thirdly', these cohesive devices are misused and mechanical. Referencing and logical sequencing are unclear throughout, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. Ideas are bundled together awkwardly, resulting in a disjointed structure that lacks overall coherence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, reflecting a limited range appropriate for the task. There are numerous word-choice and spelling errors that stem from attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'tabel' instead of table, 'cofee' instead of coffee, 'fresh coffeee', 'intrest', 'Melborne', 'calming themselve', and 'leaa'. While the intended meaning can sometimes be guessed from context, these lexical inaccuracies and misspellings are noticeable and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of descriptive vocabulary and focus on accurate spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns connected by coordinating conjunctions or faulty transition phrases. When the student attempts more complex structures, they are frequently faulty, characterized by missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and poor subject-verb agreement, such as 'Give tabel shows the information', '60% people went for cafe', and 'Brisbane people were in low amount they show less intrest'. Frequent errors in punctuation and sentence boundaries are present throughout the text, which can cause confusion and difficulty for the reader when trying to process the meaning.
