Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main task by reporting data from the bar chart regarding coffee and tea habits across five Australian cities, providing an overview and selecting several key features to compare. However, some of the data points are inaccurate or poorly integrated, and the overview is somewhat confused by vague phrasing about cities having a "drastic surge" in static survey values. Furthermore, the length requirement was not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, meaning ideas remain partially developed and under-supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs categorised by habits, and a brief conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical due to problematic transitional markers and linking words such as "While," and "However," placed mid-sentence with incorrect punctuation. Referencing and paragraph transitions are sometimes unclear, and the mechanical flow prevents a completely smooth progression of ideas throughout the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical information, though it remains limited. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "drastic surge" and "fluctuated values," but these choices are inaccurate given that the chart depicts a single-period survey rather than a time-series trend. There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including unnecessary punctuation within compound words and minor inaccuracies in reporting data terms, though these do not entirely impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and basic descriptive patterns. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in article usage, prepositions, pluralisation, and subject-verb agreement, such as "Melbourne and Sydney and Hobart has" and "instant Coffee buyers are almost rising city by city." Punctuation errors are also persistent throughout the text, including misplaced commas and run-on structures that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
