Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by covering the coffee and tea habits across the five Australian cities. It presents an overview and reports key data points, such as identifying Hobart as having the highest instant coffee consumption and Sydney leading in fresh coffee. However, some ideas and comparisons are under-developed or lack extension, which prevents a higher score. While accurate figures are cited, such as Melbourne at 63% and Brisbane at 55%, the reporting tends to list data rather than fully synthesising the overall trends. Note that 16 words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the official word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into paragraphs separating the overview from the city-by-city body paragraphs. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical and awkward due to repetitive structural patterns like 'For [City], [X]% people are accounted...' Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, and referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear. To move up, the writer needs to improve the logical flow between sentences and use a wider, more natural variety of cohesive links instead of relying heavily on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas about percentages and consumer habits. However, there are frequent word-choice, word-form, and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'Melbouran's' instead of 'Melbourne residents', 'cofee' and 'coffe' instead of 'coffee', 'represnted' for 'represented', and 'portation' instead of 'portion'. The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive, and attempts at less common phrasing often result in awkward collocations, such as 'highest instant coffee buyer'. Fixing spelling mistakes and expanding precise vocabulary will improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in grammatical patterns, verb forms, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'Melbouran's people which is the highest portion', '61% people are makeup went to a cafe', and 'people are accounted bought an instant coffee'. Punctuation and prepositions within clauses also show persistent inaccuracies. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they restrict the response to a lower band. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures will enhance grammatical control.
