Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially and presents some confusion in the data reporting. While you attempt to provide an overview and summarize the main features of the coffee and tea habits across the five Australian cities, several details are misreported or generalized incorrectly. For instance, you mention that Adelaide was the only city where people drank instant coffee more than going to a cafe, which is factually incorrect according to the chart, as Brisbane also shows higher instant coffee consumption than cafe visits. Furthermore, the final paragraph breaks down into repetitive and contradictory statements, copying phrases like 'recorded the highest proportion that is approximately 63% and 60% respectively' for both groups of cities without accurately representing the underlying data. To reach a higher band, you need to select and report accurate data from the chart without confusing the figures between different categories and cities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organization with an introductory sentence and paragraph breaks, but the response lacks clear overall progression and logical linking. The transition phrases you use, such as 'Looking at the first Melbourne and Sydney' and 'Turning to remaining Brisbane,Adelaide,Hobart', feel mechanical and do not successfully guide the reader through the data. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear; in the concluding section, you repeat the exact same statistical descriptions for different groups of cities, causing confusion. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs themselves contain repetitive and tangled information rather than developing distinct ideas or comparisons logically. To improve coherence, you should ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-sequenced point and that cohesive devices are used accurately to connect ideas rather than repeating phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, with some appropriate terms like 'illustrates', 'proportion', and 'residents'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'precentage' (spelling), 'cafe visitors' used awkwardly, and 'drinking instant coffee than going to cafe' (missing prepositional clarity). You attempt some less common vocabulary, but inaccuracies in word form and collocation occasionally emerge, such as 'city the people drinking instant coffee'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict your score. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your range of vocabulary for describing statistical trends and ensure accurate spelling and word forms throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and repetitive patterns. When you attempt more complex structures, they are frequently faulty, as seen in awkward relative clauses and missing parts of speech like 'Adelaide had only city the people drinking instant coffee'. There are frequent errors in grammar, including missing articles ('a cafe', 'the highest proportion'), incorrect prepositions ('by Melbourne citizens'), and punctuation omissions in lists ('Brisbane,Adelaide,Hobart'). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over complex grammatical forms. To improve, you need to focus on accurate subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and varied, error-free sentence structures.
