IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart illustrates the proportion of purchasing and consuming habits of coffee and tea of the residents in five cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart) of Australia. The survey included the data of last 4 weeks for three categories: fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe-based coffee or tea.
Overall, most of the residents preffered going to cafe to coffee and tea except Adelaide and the maximum proportion belongs to Melbourne. The least consumed category is the fresh coffee across all the cities, specifically, Brisbane has the lowest proportion.
The proportion of residents purchasing instant coffee is the highest in Hobart at just below 55% in comparison to buying fresh coffee at around 48%. However, the largest gap between instant and fresh coffee consuming residents is in Brisbane where the former is at around 53% and later is just below 35%. However, Adelaide is the only city to have residents consuming higher instant coffee than visiting to the cafe which is 50%.
By contrast, Melbourne has the highest proportion of residents to go to cafe for coffee or tea which is around 63% whereas Sydney and Hobart also contributes to a significant proportion of about 61% and just under 63%, respectively. Although, the proportion of residents in Brisbane is just over 55%, it has the smallest gap from the instant coffee consumers which is only 2%. However, Adelaide is even in lower side where the instant coffee consumers has higher proportion by 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the key features and comparisons across the five Australian cities. The main trends are identified, such as the general preference for visiting a cafe and the dominance of instant coffee over fresh coffee in certain locations. However, the response tends to over-generalise slightly in the overview regarding cafe preferences and includes minor inaccuracies in specific data reporting, such as misstating Hobart's instant coffee figure slightly or misinterpreting the comparison in Adelaide. These tendencies prevent it from reaching the highest tier, leaving the task response solidly in the lower-to-middle range where all parts are addressed but some ideas are slightly unevenly supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group data logically. Information flows reasonably well through the use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'By contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of transitional markers at the start of sentences like 'However, Adelaide is...' and 'However, Adelaide is even in lower side...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different comparisons, reflecting a standard organisational structure, though progression between points could be smoother to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying proportions, comparisons, and general trends using terms like 'proportion', 'category', and 'residents'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'contributes to a significant proportion', but this is sometimes marred by slight awkwardness in word choice or collocation. There are also minor lexical slips and prepositional errors related to vocabulary, such as writing 'preffered going to cafe to coffee and tea' instead of 'prefer visiting cafes for coffee and tea' or using 'lower side' rather than 'lower position'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile where vocabulary is sufficient yet lacks full precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and comparative structures, such as 'In comparison to buying fresh coffee at around 48%'. There are some grammatical errors in sentence structures and prepositions, including 'preffered going to cafe to coffee and tea' and 'consumers has higher proportion' (subject-verb agreement), along with awkward phrasing like 'is even in lower side'. Punctuation is generally acceptable. These errors persist throughout the text, but because they rarely impede overall communication and the writer maintains a reasonable mix of structures, the grammar aligns well with the expected characteristics of this band.
