Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response only minimally addresses the prompt, failing to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words by stopping abruptly at 120 words. While the writer attempts to introduce the chart and select some general features, the information presented is superficial and incomplete. There are noticeable misinterpretations of the data, such as stating that the purchase of fresh coffee declines 'through the four cities' when there are five cities shown, and claiming that fresh coffee sales decline across cities rather than showing city-by-city comparisons. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the word count requirement, present a fully developed overview, and accurately report and compare the key data points without cutting off mid-sentence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response shows an attempt at paragraphing, but the information and ideas are not arranged in a consistently coherent way. While basic transitional markers like 'overall' are used, the logical progression breaks down quickly due to incomplete thoughts and abrupt endings. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use ('where is the lowest'), and the text lacks adequate cohesive devices to connect comparisons smoothly between cities. The final paragraph cuts off incomplete ('but have'), leaving the text disjointed. Improving coherence requires clear logical sequencing, complete sentences within structured paragraphs, and appropriate cohesive ties to guide the reader through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Vocabulary usage is basic and repetitive, employing simple terms such as 'different habits', 'buying', and 'sales'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'instore purchase of coffee and tea' instead of café visits, and spelling errors like 'Autralia' and 'growthing'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, but it lacks the precision and flexibility needed to discuss statistical data effectively. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of precise nouns and verbs related to data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'decline', and 'fluctuate', while ensuring correct spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, relying primarily on simple and attempted complex sentence structures that frequently contain errors. There are frequent mistakes with verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'The bar chart illustrate', 'purchase of fresh coffee decline', 'is fluctuating through out'), subject-verb agreement, and articles. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, as seen in the lowercase 'overall' and 'australia'. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning in places. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency while expanding the variety of error-free complex sentences.
