Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview and covering the main trends across the five Australian cities. Key features such as the dominance of café visits in most cities and instant coffee in Hobart are highlighted, alongside comparisons between fresh and instant coffee. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or contain inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that buying instant coffee was preferred only in Hobart, but the data shows Brisbane also had a higher percentage for instant coffee than fresh coffee. Furthermore, some figures are misread or confused, such as the statement regarding Sydney and Melbourne figures for instant coffee, which detracts slightly from the overall precision. These minor inaccuracies and under-developments place the response at this level, as it addresses the prompt adequately but lacks the consistent precision and fully supported extension required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs focusing on café visits and coffee preferences. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as "Overall," "Conversely," and "In contrast." However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, the referencing of data points in the final paragraph becomes confused with overlapping and inaccurate statistics (e.g., "both at roughly 46% and 53%" when referring to two separate cities). Paragraphing is present and logically structured, but to reach the next band, the logical flow and the use of cohesive markers need to be smoother and more precise, ensuring seamless transitions between comparisons without ambiguity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "proportion," "consumption," and "dominante." However, there are notable spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies, such as "hobart," "busing," "consisitently," "domiante," "tendency" (used instead of trend), "Reagarding," "coffe," and "Hobert." While these lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrate better control of word formation and spelling, and incorporate more natural collocations appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions ("The bar chart illustrates the proportion of residents... who engaged..."). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing hyphens or incorrect punctuation in lists (e.g., "Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart-" and "between 34%,34% and 38%"), missing articles ("reaching closely with 55%"), and minor subject-verb agreement slips. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable control. To move to a higher band, the student would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate more consistent punctuation and grammatical precision.
