Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of the chart and providing relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities. An overview is present, highlighting that café visits were the most common habit and fresh coffee purchases the least. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student misreads or misprints several figures, such as stating '545' instead of 54.5%, '20% in Adelaide' for instant coffee (which is actually 50%), and '395' for Hobart's fresh coffee. Despite these data errors, the overall trends are outlined, placing the response in this band category where the task is covered, but with some lack of precision in supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. Information and ideas are generally organized logically by categories (café visits and coffee purchases). However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with repetitive sentence openings such as 'The percentage of...' and awkward transitions between data points. Referencing and mechanical linking could be smoother to ensure a better flow of information throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic comparisons and categories like 'proportion', 'residents', and 'buyers'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and comparative structures, but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and typographical errors, such as writing 'proprtion' instead of proportion and 'hobart' with a lowercase letter. There are also collocational awkwardness instances like 'to bought instant coffee' instead of buying instant coffee, which reflect a limited control of word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with infinitive and gerund verb patterns, such as 'prefered to went to cafe' instead of preferring to go, and 'percentage of city residents went to cafe' lacking a relative pronoun or participle. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. These errors occur throughout the text but rarely impede overall communication.
