Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to address the task by highlighting some main features and making basic comparisons across the five Australian cities. However, the coverage is only partial. The overview is underdeveloped, containing awkward phrasing such as 'went to a cafe for coffee or tea had marked highest percentage', which fails to clearly summarize the overarching trends in the data. While the response does report several specific figures from the visual data, such as mentioning the percentages for visiting a café or buying instant coffee, some data points are inaccurate or poorly contextualized. For instance, the discussion of fresh coffee claims that Sydney and Melbourne showed a huge percentage around 43%, 42%, while misinterpreting other data points. Ideas remain somewhat limited and require more precise selection and reporting of key trends to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with an attempt at paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Ideas are grouped into paragraphs, yet the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs is frequently disrupted by mechanical and inadequate cohesive devices. For example, transition phrases are either missing or awkward, such as 'Whereas, bought instant coffee percentage noticed increase trend' and 'There is an evident proven from the image'. Referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult to follow the relationships between the data points and the cities. Paragraphing is attempted, but it is not used effectively to guide the reader through a well-structured comparison of the chart's information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic terminology and attempts less common phrasing with frequent errors in word choice, word form, and collocation. Examples include 'marked highest percentage', 'notice increase trend', and 'shown rose percentage', which demonstrate a lack of control over appropriate collocations for data commentary. There are also issues with word forms, such as using 'hobart' and 'syndey' with improper capitalization, and awkward phrasing like 'coffee or tea sector'. While the meaning can sometimes be deciphered, the noticeable lexical errors and repetitive vocabulary restrict the response to a lower band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including missing articles ('went to a cafe'), incorrect prepositions ('for last 4 weeks'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Brisbane and Adelaide was'), and awkward passive/active confusions ('is shown rose percentage'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also problematic, with run-on phrasing and missing punctuation points that make reading difficult. These frequent errors in basic and attempted complex structures cause strain and occasionally obscure the intended meaning of the sentences.
