Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities. The overview touches upon the main trends, noting that most residents visit cafes and outlining the order of preferences. However, some ideas and comparisons are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of data for Brisbane and Hobart lacks a clear comparative structure, and expressions like 'reamining two bars reamin under less than 50%' lack clarity in relating back to the specific categories of fresh and instant coffee. Overall, the selection of data covers the chart adequately, but the depth of reporting remains limited, fulfilling the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview paragraph, body details, and a concluding summary. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The transitional devices and referencing can be repetitive or awkward, such as 'Same goes with Melbourne' and 'Going through Brisbane'. Paragraphing is present, but the organisation within the body paragraph lacks a smooth logical progression, jumping somewhat abruptly between cities and beverage types without guiding the reader clearly through the data set.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to percentages, preferences, and survey results. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'surged' and 'preference', but this is accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling. For instance, 'demonstarte' contains a spelling error, 'refeshments' is misspelled, and phrases like 'moving to cafe' or 'scopes' show awkward collocation. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score, as the range remains limited and imprecise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'a survey done on people's... habits' and 'residents prefer to go to cafe'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions that recur throughout the text. Examples include 'demonstarte result of the survey' (missing articles and subject-verb agreement), 'lies in Australia' (tense/participle error for 'located'), and 'he most people' (extraneous word). Although these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited level of grammatical control.
