Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by reporting some main features and comparisons from the chart, such as noting that café visits generally scored the highest across cities and highlighting specific figures like Sydney and Melbourne's café percentages. However, the selection of data is somewhat disjointed and lacks a fully developed overview. For instance, the overview merely states that cities got the highest score in café visits and the lowest in fresh coffee, without capturing the broader picture or integrating all three categories clearly. Certain details are also inaccurate or vague, such as misstating Brisbane's fresh coffee figure as 34% (which is close to the chart's 34.5%, but other figures are imprecise). To reach a higher band, the response needs a clearer, more cohesive overview and a more thorough, accurate reporting of key trends across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation through basic paragraphing and transitional phrases like 'Overall', 'On the one hand', and 'On the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices. For example, sentences such as 'the sydney and melbourn there have althought high band in went to a cafe for coffee, there have been 61% and 64%' are confusing and poorly linked. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks smooth transitions and clear thematic grouping. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices are used accurately and that ideas are sequenced logically to guide the reader seamlessly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies on repetitive phrasing, such as 'bought fresh coffee', 'bought instant coffee', and 'went to a cafe for coffee', throughout the response. There are also frequent word choice and word formation errors, such as 'human's' instead of 'humans' or 'people', and spelling mistakes like 'hobert' instead of 'Hobart' and 'melbourn' instead of 'Melbourne'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and these noticeable inaccuracies occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate synonyms to avoid repetition, and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are heavily flawed. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in brisbane 34%, the lowest section of that'), incorrect verb forms ('got the highest score in went to a cafe'), preposition misuse, and severe subject-verb or clause-structure breakdowns, such as 'the sydney and melbourn there have althought high band'. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To progress, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, correct use of verbs and prepositions, and eliminating fundamental grammatical errors.
