Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the main features of the coffee and tea habits across the five Australian cities. It meets the minimum word count requirement, with 19 words copied from the prompt excluded. The student clearly identifies the highest categories, such as café visits being the most popular activity, and highlights city-specific trends like Hobart and Brisbane leading in instant coffee consumption. However, the response sits at a middle band because some ideas and comparisons are slightly under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the phrase 'smaller proportion of people who bought fresh coffee or instant coffee from cafe' contains a factual confusion, as buying coffee beans or instant coffee usually happens in retail stores rather than cafés, and the distinction between the three survey categories could be more thoroughly extended and supported with precise data points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the categories. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'On contrast', and 'There are more instant coffee consumers'. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear. For example, 'On contrast' is a minor error in collocation for transitional phrases, and the link between sentences in the final paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, but smoother transitions and more sophisticated referencing are needed to reach the next band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate information about percentages and consumer habits. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and topic-specific terms such as 'proportion', 'consumers', and 'survey'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices that prevent a higher score. Examples include 'regurlarly' (spelling), 'visits' instead of 'visit' (agreement/form), 'smaller proportion' instead of 'a smaller proportion' (article omission), and 'more demanding' instead of 'more popular' or 'in higher demand' (collocation). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in lexical control characteristic of this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'The percentage ranges from 49% to 65% people who regurlarly visits cafe in last 4 weeks.' There are some grammatical errors present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('residents visits', 'Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart holds', 'there a less consumers'), missing articles ('in last 04 weeks'), and prepositional errors. Despite these recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, the structures used do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader, aligning with the expected profile for this level.
