Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and presents several inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the text states that in Brisbane the sales of fresh coffee were 34% while the other two categories were 'almost similar in its sales... which is nearly 55%', whereas the chart shows instant coffee at 53% and cafe visits at 55.5%. Similarly, the details provided for Hobart and Adelaide contain confused comparisons and misread figures, such as stating that Adelaide fresh coffee was 'halved from the went to cafe and bought instant cafe that is 50%', which misinterprets the proportions. The overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall main trends across the five cities, meaning key features are not fully and accurately reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the text, with an introduction and body sentences attempting to group information by city, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, such as the confusing transitional phrase 'whether rest of the two categories' in the Brisbane section. Referencing and linking between sentences often lack clarity, making the logical flow disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within the single large body block are not logically sequenced to make comparisons easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to attempt descriptions of data trends. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that occasionally cause confusion, such as 'purchage' instead of 'purchase', 'Sydeny' for 'Sydney', 'maximun' for 'maximum', and 'similiarity' for 'similarity'. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'proportion' and 'category', but word choice and collocation are sometimes awkward, such as 'bought fresh and instant coffee shows similiarity in its sales'. These vocabulary limitations restrict the precision needed for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response shows a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader. There are regular issues with subject-verb agreement and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'gives the information about' and 'went to a cafe and purchased instant coffee represents 63% and 54%' (where plural verbs are needed for plural subjects). Attempts at complex structures often result in faulty grammar, such as 'In Sydeny, maximun proportion of residents went to a cafe for coffee or tea which is nearly 63%, while bought fresh and instant coffee shows similiarity...'. Punctuation is also occasionally unreliable.
