Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to report some data from the chart, the information presented contains inaccuracies and lacks a clear, fully developed overview. For instance, the overview incorrectly claims that the proportion of city residents who went to a cafe for coffee or tea is the highest in Hobart, whereas the chart shows Melbourne and Sydney at higher levels, and mentions Brisbane bought fresh coffee was lowest when Adelaide and Brisbane share similar figures for fresh coffee. Furthermore, the body paragraphs struggle to accurately synthesize the data, relying on fragmented and confusing descriptions of percentages such as "bought fresh coffee in last 4 weeks accounted for 43% and bought instant coffee in last 4 weeks at 45%". To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide an accurate overview of the main trends without misinterpreting the data and ensure that key features are correctly selected and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response displays some organization with basic introductory and body paragraph structures, but it lacks clear overall progression. The logical flow between sentences and paragraphs is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and confusing transitions, such as starting sentences with "On the other hand, in Austraila Adelaide are coffee and tea represents...". Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of data across the five cities. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of each paragraph is weak due to disjointed ideas and lack of clear referencing. To improve, the writer should group related data logically, ensure smooth transitions between sentences, and use cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling mistakes throughout the text, including "ceffee", "Melboume", "Brishbane", and "dramaticaly", alongside awkward lexical choices such as "buying and drinking habits in five cities namely" and grammatical word-form errors like "sharply rose fresh and instant coffee are minor change". The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to describe the chart, and attempts at less-common terms result in unnatural collocations. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and use precise terms related to data reporting, such as verbs and nouns indicating trends and proportions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement, missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms, and awkward clause structures, such as "the proportion of city residents went to a cafe..." and "Adelaide are coffee and tea represents were significantly decreased". Punctuation is also problematic in places, impeding the overall readability of the text. To reach a higher band, the writer must improve their control over basic sentence patterns, ensure correct verb tenses and forms when reporting data, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors that disrupt communication.
