Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to address the task by discussing some data from the chart, but it suffers from significant misinterpretations and inaccurate reporting of the visual information. For example, the student confuses café visits and buying habits with drinking tea or coffee generally, and misreads specific figures, stating that Sydney had 61% people buying tea when the category actually represents visiting a café for coffee or tea. Furthermore, key trends across the five cities are largely missed, and the overview lacks clarity. To move to a higher level, the response must accurately report the data provided in the prompt without misinterpreting the categories, and present a clear, comprehensive overview of the main features and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The writing shows an attempt to organise information into paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas is disjointed and lacks a clear logical flow. While basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Apart from that', and 'On the other hand' are used, referencing and transitions are often mechanical or confusing, making it difficult to follow the comparisons between cities. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within the paragraphs are not always logically grouped. To improve, the writer needs to ensure a smoother, clearer progression of ideas throughout the response, using cohesive devices more naturally and purposefully to link related data points and comparisons together.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, but it is limited and repetitive for an academic task. There are notable lexical inaccuracies and confusion regarding word choices, such as writing 'cofee' (spelling error) and misusing terms like 'ratio' instead of 'percentage' or 'proportion'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation errors are noticeable, such as 'coffee rate' or 'drinking habits of coffee and tea'. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, use precise terms for statistical data, and ensure accurate spelling and word formation throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex ones. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb tense and form (e.g., 'This graphs elaborated', 'people brought tea', 'was observed'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases. These errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in understanding the intended meaning. To progress, the writer needs to improve grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and the formation of complex sentence structures with correct punctuation.
