Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response falls slightly short of the minimum length requirement, containing 149 words (with 9 words copied from the prompt uncounted). The student attempts to address the task by mentioning the cities and general categories, but the response is minimal and tangential in places. For example, stating that coffee has been 'brough in last 4 weeks as a fresh, instant and tea coffee' misinterprets the data categories presented in the chart. While some key features are noted, such as the highest and lowest points, the overall reporting lacks a clear, fully developed overview and fails to make accurate, comprehensive comparisons across all three categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response displays basic organisational attempts, but information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. The student attempts to use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', but these transitions feel mechanical and do not establish a clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is weak, with the entire body of the response compressed into a single block of text alongside the introductory and concluding sentences, which hinders the readability and flow of the information presented.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary use is basic and repetitive, struggling with accurate word choices and collocations. The student relies on simple terms and makes noticeable lexical errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'categories' instead of 'categorised', 'brough' instead of 'bought', and referring to categories as 'fresh, instant and tea coffee'. There is a limited range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task, restricting the response's ability to precisely describe the trends and proportions shown in the visual data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on basic sentence structures with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in grammatical patterns, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'The given bar graphs is', 'in the x-axis there are number of cities', and 'the image provide several information'. Attempts at more complex sentences result in structural faults, and punctuation errors are common throughout the text, impeding smooth communication.
