Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a mechanistic listing of data points rather than a well-structured summary. While you manage to report figures for all three categories across the five cities, the approach is overly dependent on a repetitive listing style, such as 'About 43 percent, 42 percent...'. Furthermore, the overview at the end is brief and contains inaccuracies or oversimplifications, noting that 'instant coffee buying statistics were less in Adelaide' when Adelaide's figure was actually 50 percent, higher than Sydney and Melbourne. To move to a higher level, you should select and report the main trends and striking differences—such as comparing overall preference for cafes versus instant coffee—rather than attempting to list every individual percentage in a continuous string.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response lacks clear overall progression and logical paragraphing. The entire body of the text is written as a single dense block instead of being separated into an introduction, an overview, and logical body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying mostly on repetitive connectors like 'moreover' and 'as well as' to chain long, run-on sentences together. Reference and progression are difficult to follow because the data is crowded into a continuous narrative. To improve, you should group related information into distinct paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive phrases to guide the reader smoothly through comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary use is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable spelling and word choice errors that detract from the writing. There are repeated spelling mistakes, such as 'Australlia' and 'Melborne', as well as lowercase letters for proper nouns like 'hobart' and 'brisbane'. You attempt basic reporting vocabulary, but phrases like 'significant numbers of fresh coffee buying' lack natural collocation and precision. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, improve your spelling control, and use more precise phrasing such as 'purchased freshly ground coffee' or 'higher proportion of residents'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of overly long simple sentences joined by conjunctions. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing commas in complex lists and lack of subject-verb agreement or tense consistency, such as 'The statistics showed...'. Attempts at complex structures result in heavy run-on sentences that cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, you must vary your sentence structures by incorporating subordinate clauses accurately, while paying closer attention to punctuation, articles, and basic grammatical boundaries to reduce error frequency.
