Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the coffee and tea survey across the five Australian cities. An overview is attempted, noting the general popularity of visiting cafes compared to buying fresh or instant coffee, along with Adelaide's contrasting pattern regarding instant coffee. However, some aspects of the response lack full development, and certain details are slightly imprecise, such as describing Brisbane's fresh coffee figure as 'about 33%' when it is 34.5%. Additionally, the overview would benefit from highlighting more comparative trends across the categories. These limitations place the task response securely at the present level, as it addresses the prompt adequately but leaves some details under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, grouping information by categories and cities to present the data. However, the organization is hindered by a lack of paragraphing—the entire body of the response is crammed into two lengthy, run-on blocks of text without appropriate separation. Cohesive devices are also somewhat mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on basic conjunctions like 'while' and 'whereas' to link clauses. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the absence of a proper introductory paragraph or distinct layout means the progression of ideas is not always smooth. Addressing these structural and paragraphing weaknesses would significantly improve the clarity and logical flow of the writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used to accomplish the task, with appropriate topic-specific terms like 'proportion', 'survey outcome', and 'trends'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and descriptive phrasing, but this is accompanied by noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'condiserably' instead of 'considerably', 'cafey' instead of 'café', and 'preffered' instead of 'preferred'. While these lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not heavily impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Expanding the range of precise vocabulary and ensuring accurate word formation and spelling are key areas for future improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, grammar and punctuation control is inconsistent. There are several punctuation errors, including a complete lack of terminal full stops and capitalisation at the beginning of sentences, as seen in 'the percentage of people...'. Furthermore, there are minor agreement and prepositional issues, such as 'people who buys fresh coffee' instead of 'buy'. While these grammatical errors rarely impede communication and the mix of structures shows some ambition, the frequent punctuation lapses and occasional slip in subject-verb agreement keep the grammar score at this level.
