Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising information from the chart, but it does so only partially. While you correctly identify some data points, such as the café attendance in Sydney at 61% and Melbourne at 64%, your selection of features lacks focus and does not provide a fully accurate or balanced overview of the main trends. For instance, your overview states that 'the mostly people of melbourne has increased in trend', which is confusing and misinterprets static survey data as a chronological change over time. Furthermore, the details provided are incomplete and omit important information regarding Adelaide and Hobart, and you fail to make significant or clear comparisons between the five cities as requested by the task instructions. To achieve a higher band, you need to present a clearer and more accurate overview of the main trends and select key data points to compare effectively across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, as you attempt to separate the overall statement from body details, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. The sequencing of ideas feels disjointed, and the relationships between sentences are not always logical. Cohesive devices are used minimally and somewhat awkwardly, such as repetitive use of 'Moreover' and 'Also', or lack proper linking phrases altogether. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, with the response broken into a series of short, abrupt sentences and paragraphs that do not guide the reader smoothly through the data. To improve cohesion, you should ensure that your ideas are logically sequenced and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and paragraphs, ensuring a smooth and clear progression of information throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You rely heavily on repetitive, basic words and phrases, such as 'trend', 'buying', and 'people', using them repeatedly rather than varying your language. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing 'vist cafe' instead of 'visit cafés' or 'the mostly people', which indicate a restricted control of word choice and collocation. Additionally, spelling errors like 'coffe' occur. To move to a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary range by incorporating less common and more precise lexical items related to data reporting (such as 'proportion', 'percentage', or 'majority'), and pay closer attention to accurate word forms, collocations, and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. When you attempt more complex constructions, they are often faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'the mostly people of melbourne has increased in trend to going to the cafe'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense usage, prepositions, and articles, such as 'The Given chart provide', 'people of Australian five cities', and missing auxiliary verbs in 'the hobart rise in trend'. These errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and obscure your meaning. To achieve a higher band, you must demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures with better control over grammar, ensuring subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and accurate tense selection in descriptive writing.
