Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, as it includes irrelevant memorised template language in the introduction ('I will discuss this in detail in body paragraph') and fails to present a clear, fully developed overview. While some data points from the visual are reported for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart, the selection of features is incomplete and lacks adequate comparison. For instance, the data is listed city by city in a mechanical fashion without highlighting the overarching trends, such as the general preference for café visits over buying fresh coffee. Furthermore, some figures contain inaccuracies when compared to the source chart, such as misstating the percentage for fresh coffee in Brisbane and Adelaide. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide a clear overview outlining the main trends and integrate more meaningful comparisons across all categories rather than just listing isolated data points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation with basic paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The relationship between ideas is often unclear, and cohesive devices are used inadequately or repetitively. For example, transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Therefore' are awkwardly applied, and the concluding sentence ('Therefore the drinking habbits in Melbourne is greater, As per the conclusion') fails to summarise the data logically. Referencing is also faulty, with ambiguous pronouns and repetitive naming of cities without smooth cohesive links. Paragraphing is attempted, but the inclusion of the conversational introductory remark disrupts the structure. To improve, the writer should ensure each paragraph flows logically into the next, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and remove unacademic, conversational fillers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic terminology directly lifted from the prompt, alongside noticeable spelling and word choice errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical errors include 'habbits' instead of 'habits', 'adelade' instead of 'Adelaide', 'Hoburt' instead of 'Hobart', and misuse of the word 'state' when referring to cities like Sydney and Melbourne. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are absent, and the range of descriptive words is very narrow. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include precise synonyms and vocabulary related to data reporting, while improving spelling and ensuring correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting complex or compound structures. There are noticeable grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'habbit... are' and 'the drinking habbits in Melbourne is', missing articles like 'went to cafe', and incorrect prepositional use such as 'in last four weeks'. Punctuation and capitalization errors are also present, including random capitalization ('As per the conclusion') and missing apostrophes ('café's'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences, maintain consistent subject-verb agreement, and pay closer attention to articles, plurals, and prepositions.
