Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially because it falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 127 words. While the writer attempts to select and report main features, such as identifying that visiting cafes was the most preferred activity overall and noting specific city data like Melbourne and Hobart, the information is limited and under-developed. There are inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating that Adelaide had around 50 percent for visiting cafes for instant coffee, which confuses the categories presented in the chart. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the minimum word count requirement and present a fully developed overview with accurate data representation without confusing the survey categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the structure, with an introductory sentence and separate paragraphs attempting to group data. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel abrupt. Cohesive devices are mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the frequent use of 'while' and 'however' without proper contextual links. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure ideas follow a clear, logical sequence and use a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of data across the five cities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas about the chart. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that detract from the response, such as 'mostely', 'preffered', 'Sydeny', 'hobart', 'peoples', and 'intrested'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the task, but spelling and morphological errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors, ensuring that terms like city names and descriptive adjectives are written accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements with frequent errors when attempting more complex patterns. There are noticeable grammatical mistakes throughout the text, including errors in verb forms ('prefer to went cafe' instead of 'prefer to go to cafes'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, such as subject-verb agreement, correct infinitive verb forms, and accurate punctuation, while reducing the frequency of errors in complex sentences.
