Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by mentioning some figures from the chart, such as pointing out that around 44% of people in Sydney bought fresh coffee and noting data for Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the response only minimally and tangentially responds to the core requirements of Task 1. It fails to provide a clear, coherent overview of the main trends and makes numerous inaccurate references to the data, such as confusing time periods (referring to 'last four years' instead of 'last 4 weeks') and misinterpreting categories and cities. The information presented is fragmented, lacking a structured overview and failing to make the necessary overall comparisons across the five Australian cities. To reach a higher level, the writer must select key features accurately, present a clear overview statement, and report figures without factual distortion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text lacks a logical overall organization and progression. Information and ideas are presented in a jumbled manner without clear paragraphing, creating a single dense block of text that is difficult to follow. The response relies heavily on repetitive sentence starters like 'The peoples are went...' and 'And the next country is...', making the flow mechanical and confusing. Furthermore, cohesive devices are used inadequately and inaccurately, resulting in disjointed transitions between cities and categories. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to organize the response into clear paragraphs, such as an introduction with an overview followed by body paragraphs grouping related data, and use appropriate, varied cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on words provided directly in the prompt such as 'coffee', 'tea', 'buying', and 'drinking'. There are frequent errors in word choice, word form, and collocation, including awkward phrasing like 'bought fresh coffee people are coming' and 'went cafefircoffee'. These lexical limitations and errors place strain on the reader and impede clear communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should build a wider range of vocabulary appropriate for academic data reporting, such as verbs and nouns to describe trends accurately, and pay closer attention to standard collocations and correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying almost entirely on simple sentences that frequently break down. Errors are frequent and often distort the intended meaning, such as severe subject-verb agreement issues ('peoples are went', 'the percentage off fresh coffee is almost same'), incorrect prepositions, and faulty verb tenses ('in last four years'). Additionally, punctuation is poorly handled throughout the text. To progress to higher bands, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, ensure correct verb forms and tense consistency, eliminate persistent agreement errors, and incorporate a controlled mix of complex structures with higher accuracy.
