Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of coffee and tea habits across the five Australian cities. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key trends such as cafe visits peaking in certain cities and instant coffee being popular in Brisbane and Adelaide. Key data points and comparisons are generally accurate, matching the provided visual data well. However, some ideas and details are slightly under-developed or imprecise, preventing a higher score. For instance, the discussion of individual cities tends to list figures without fully extending the analysis of how they relate to the overall picture. Overall, the information is well-selected, fulfilling the requirements for this level while leaving room for deeper comparative insight.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically, starting with an overview and moving into city-by-city comparisons. Paragraphing is used to separate different sections of the data. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear. For example, transitions between sentences and ideas can feel abrupt, such as starting paragraphs with raw lists of figures without smooth introductory signposts. Additionally, cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or inadequate, which disrupts the natural flow of progression from one point to the next. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the overall logical structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the student to report percentages and trends effectively with phrases like 'the proportion of people', 'slight rise', and 'significant increase'. The response attempts some less common vocabulary related to survey data and habits, though this is sometimes accompanied by minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as writing 'individual's' instead of 'individuals'' or 'for bought fresh coffee' instead of 'who bought fresh coffee'. Spelling and word-form errors are present but do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, the student should aim for greater precision and flexibility in lexical selection, avoiding repetitive structures when describing statistical changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as run-on sentences and comma splices in paragraphs three and four (e.g., 'whereas, there was a significant increase... comparing to Melbourne which had similar pattern, people who bought fresh coffee was at 43%'). Subject-verb agreement and prepositions also show occasional lapses. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning. A greater variety of error-free complex structures and tighter punctuation control would be required to achieve a higher score.
