Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising information from the chart regarding coffee and tea habits across five Australian cities, but it does so only partially. While it identifies some key features, such as cafe visits ranking highest in most cities and mentions various city data points, the presentation is incomplete. The writing cuts off abruptly at the end with an unfinished sentence ('In contrast, Sydeny ranked first in freshly bought coffee'), leaving the final comparison undeveloped. Furthermore, some of the data reported contains inaccuracies or missing context when compared to the visual source. The overall selection of features lacks a clear, fully realised overview that captures the main trends across all three categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation with basic sequencing, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with a lack of proper capitalization and erratic line breaks that disrupt the flow. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'follwed by' and the abrupt transitions between categories. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of ideas. To improve, the writer needs to group related data more logically, use a wider variety of accurate cohesive links, and ensure correct sentence and paragraph formatting throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the chart. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to surveys and statistics, such as 'survey', 'ranked', and 'percentage', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, including 'follwed', 'Adalaide', 'instantly bought coffee', and 'Sydeny'. These errors and awkward phrasings sometimes cause slight difficulty or hesitation for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer should use a broader range of precise vocabulary, avoid unnatural collocations like 'instantly bought coffee', and check spelling carefully before final submission.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and repetitive patterns. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, such as 'The number of people went to a cafe', which lacks a relative pronoun or participle, and 'while number of people who bought fresh coffee ranked lowest', which misses a necessary article. Frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization (such as starting the second paragraph with 'overall'), and basic grammatical structures persist throughout the text and can cause some difficulty for the reader. Greater control over basic sentence construction and grammatical accuracy is needed.
