Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the three activities and give a useful overall comparison: café visits are generally popular, while fresh coffee purchases are comparatively low. Several figures are also reported accurately, including instant coffee in Hobart and Brisbane and fresh coffee in Sydney and Melbourne. However, the overview is unclear and contains a key misstatement: Melbourne does not have the highest café attendance; its figure is about 63.5%, slightly above Hobart’s 63%, while Sydney is lower at 61%. The claim that fresh coffee is the lowest in every city is also too broad, since instant coffee is lower than fresh coffee in Sydney. To make the response more complete, state the main patterns precisely and compare café attendance across all five cities, including Adelaide’s lower result.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about instant and fresh coffee. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is grouped. However, progression is weakened by an unclear overview and an abrupt, incomplete ending that repeats the café point rather than adding a clear summary. Linking is sometimes inaccurate or mechanical: “In contrast” is left as a fragment, and “Generally” introduces a conclusion that largely repeats earlier information. The sentence beginning “When its came to bought instant coffee” also combines several comparisons without a clear pattern. Organise the body paragraphs around the three activities or two clear comparison groups, and use linking phrases only where the relationship between ideas is explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “followed by,” and “hovering around,” which helps describe the chart. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make parts difficult to read. Examples include “coffee goer,” “choosing instant coffee,” and “a cafe visiting a among common”; these are not natural ways to describe survey results. Spelling errors such as “expection,” “coffe,” “adelailde,” and “approxemetily” are also noticeable. Aim for accurate, repeatable chart language such as “the proportion who bought instant coffee” and “the share of residents visiting a café,” and proofread city names and key terms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use longer comparative sentences, for example, “Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart has lower percentage,” but control is inconsistent and errors frequently affect clarity. Subject–verb agreement is faulty in “cities … has,” while “When its came to bought” has problems with both the verb form and sentence construction. Articles and sentence boundaries are also unreliable: “In contrast.” is a fragment, and the final sentence, “with a cafe visiting a among common in all of them,” is not grammatically complete. Most sentences rely on simple patterns, with limited accurate complex structure. Build comparisons using a reliable frame such as “The proportion was highest in Hobart, at about 55%, followed by Brisbane at 53%,” then check agreement, articles, and complete sentences.
