Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the three survey categories and include an overview, noting that café visits were highest across the cities. You also report several figures that broadly match the chart, including fresh-coffee levels in Brisbane and Adelaide and instant-coffee levels across all five cities. However, the overview is inaccurate: instant coffee was not the least common activity in every city; café visits were higher than instant coffee in all five. The final conclusion repeats this misreading. Some comparisons are also imprecise, such as saying café visits were between 60% and 65% in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart, when Sydney was about 61% and the other two were around 63%. Select the main contrasts accurately and make the overview reflect them clearly; this would make the response more complete and relevant to the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, two detail paragraphs and a conclusion. Phrases such as “Turning to the remaining details” help signal a shift between categories, and the information is generally grouped by survey activity. However, progression is weakened by the conclusion, which repeats an incorrect claim rather than synthesising the main pattern. Some linking is mechanical, and the long detail paragraph on fresh and instant coffee is difficult to follow because several figures are run together without clear sentence boundaries. Use clearer punctuation and organise comparisons consistently—for example, compare the three activities across cities or discuss each activity in a separate paragraph. This would make the relationships between the figures easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary, including “proportion,” “residents,” “approximately” and “in contrast,” and the reader can usually understand which survey category you mean. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a chart: “percentum,” “percentile,” “was recoded at” and “was provided at” do not express the intended meaning. “A cursory glance” and “crystal clear” are also overly elaborate for a neutral report. There are spelling errors, including “habbits” and “wheras,” and repeated use of “citizens” and “proportion” limits precision. Prefer straightforward, accurate chart language such as “the percentage of residents,” “stood at” and “was highest.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning “whereas” and “in contrast,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors are frequent in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “the proportion … were stood” has incorrect agreement and verb form, while “that was around 34%” does not clearly attach to the preceding comparison. Missing spaces after full stops and commas, as in “MELBOURNE.THIS” and “SYDNEY,MELBOURNE,” also make the text harder to read. Articles and prepositions are sometimes omitted, as in “visited a cafe” and “in last month.” Build shorter, complete sentences first, then check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation before adding complex structures.
