Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response attempts to describe the chart and gives an overview, but the main features are not reported reliably. The overview says Melbourne had the highest café figure, although Hobart and Melbourne are almost equal and Hobart is marginally lower; it also identifies Brisbane as having the lowest fresh-coffee figure, which is correct. However, several figures are assigned to the wrong categories or cities: Melbourne’s fresh-coffee figure is given as about 64% rather than about 42.5%, and Sydney’s fresh-coffee figure is reported as 61% rather than about 44%. Brisbane’s café figure is also stated as about 39%, instead of about 55.5%. Hobart’s café result is omitted. Select the key comparisons and check each value against its series before writing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing city results. Phrases such as “Overall,” “First,” and “By comparison” help signal the stages of the report. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the city-by-city comparisons mix up categories and leave some information incomplete. The overview is not clearly supported by the details, and the final sentence about Hobart ends without reporting its café result. Some linking words, including “furthermore,” “however,” and “whereas,” are used where the relationship between the ideas is unclear. Grouping the figures by category or comparing the highest and lowest results would create a clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “survey,” “ratio,” “bought,” and “in the last four weeks,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “people who want to a cafe” and “brought fresh coffee.” Repetition of “about” and “people” also makes the description less precise. Spelling errors such as “coffeee,” “boght,” and “frsh” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Use standard reporting language for survey results and vary expressions for proportions, while checking spelling carefully. More accurate vocabulary would help distinguish buying coffee from visiting a café.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “Brisbane had 51% bought fresh coffee whereas…” and the overview joined with “furthermore.” However, these structures are often faulty, and the reader must work to understand the intended relationships. Verb patterns are a recurring problem: “Melbourne had about 64% of people bought” should use a construction such as “about 64% of people bought.” There are also errors in articles and sentence boundaries, as in “went to cafe for coffee,” while commas are placed incorrectly around “while” and “however.” Aim for accurate, complete clauses first, then add linking clauses with correct punctuation. This would make the comparisons easier to follow.
