Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the three activities and provide an overview, noting that café visits are generally the most popular and fresh coffee purchases are comparatively low. You also include figures for all five cities, so the response is relevant to the chart. However, the overview is imprecise: café visits were not higher in only one city; they were the largest category in four cities, while in Adelaide instant coffee was slightly higher. Several details are inaccurate or unclear, including Melbourne’s café figure (about 63.5%, not 66%) and its fresh-coffee figure (about 42.5%, not 47%). Hobart’s instant-coffee figure is about 54.5%, not 58%. Select the main comparisons accurately and state them clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that group city details. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the body moves from Sydney and Adelaide to Melbourne and Hobart, then Brisbane, without a clear comparison principle. Phrases such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” do not express a meaningful contrast here, and repeated “Moreover,” “finally,” and “In addition” make the linking feel mechanical. Some references, such as “first two case,” are difficult to follow. Group cities by a clear feature or compare the three categories systematically, using fewer and more precise linking expressions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “purchased,” and “approximately,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “went to shop for coffee and tea” does not accurately describe going to a café, while “purchased fresh coffee was lowest” is an awkward way to express the comparison. There are also spelling errors such as “coffe” and “frest,” and repeated use of “very high” or “very low.” Build a more precise set of reporting phrases, such as “the proportion who visited a café” and “recorded the highest figure,” and check spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the overview uses a contrastive structure. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences difficult to understand. Examples include “the proportion to went resturant,” “in sydney purchased fresh coffee … proportion was,” and “hobart was also had highest percentage.” These show problems with verb forms, sentence construction, articles, and prepositions. Punctuation also causes run-on sentences, as in the Sydney description, where several figures are joined without clear sentence boundaries. Practise forming a clear subject–verb sentence for each comparison, for example, “In Sydney, 44% bought fresh coffee, compared with 45.5% who bought instant coffee.” Use full stops to separate ideas and check agreement and verb forms.
