Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response attempts an overview and city-by-city comparisons, but the main features are not accurately reported. It says Hobart has the highest overall consumption and Adelaide the lowest, although café visits are highest in Melbourne and Hobart, while fresh coffee is lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide; instant coffee is highest in Hobart. More seriously, most figures are substantially misread: for example, Sydney fresh coffee is given as 60% rather than about 44%, and its café figure is described as below 45% rather than about 61%. The overview also refers vaguely to “consumed coffee” instead of distinguishing the three survey activities. Select the key highs and lows, report the categories correctly, and support the overview with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening, an overview, and a sequence of city-specific details. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is being presented. However, the overview is difficult to interpret, and the body reads as a repetitive list, with each city described using nearly the same pattern. Connectors such as “or” do not clearly show how the three activities relate, and the paragraphing does not group comparisons across cities. A clearer structure would present an overview of the main patterns, then compare fresh and instant coffee across cities, followed by café attendance, using accurate linking and reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” “percentage,” and “cafe,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, word choice and collocation are often awkward or repetitive, as in “highest consumed coffee city,” “fresh coffee consumer,” and “went a cafe consumer coffee.” The repeated use of “consumer” also makes the account less precise, since the chart reports residents who bought or visited rather than consumers as a category. Use concise reporting language and vary the verbs appropriately: for example, “the proportion who bought” and “visited a café.” Check forms such as “café” and avoid phrases that obscure the comparison.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both an overview and longer comparison sentences, but grammatical control is inconsistent and sentence structures are mostly repetitive. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in phrases such as “The chart below illustrate” and “Melbourne are above,” while articles and sentence construction are problematic in “where the fresh coffee in last week is to be a 60 percentage.” Several lines run together without clear punctuation, making relationships between the figures hard to follow. Practise accurate simple comparison patterns first, such as “In Sydney, about 44% bought fresh coffee, compared with 46% who bought instant coffee.” Then add a limited range of complex clauses while checking agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
