Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the outcomes of a survey of last 4 weeks about citizen's tea and coffee consumption and purchasing habits in five Australian cities; Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.

Overall, mostly every city prefered to went to a cafe for coffee or tea in last 4 weeks. While, the least favourite habbit of citizens of every city was to buy fresh coffee in last 4 weeks.

In Sydney, 40% to 45% residents prefered to purchase fresh coffee and buy instant coffee. However, more than 60% citizens choose to go to a cafe for consuming tea or coffee. Compared to Sydney, Melbourne's citizen around 65% went to cafe for coffee or tea, while purchasing fresh coffee and instant coffee stayed between 40% to 50%.

Brisbane's residents were the least for buying fresh coffee at just below 35%, while buying instant coffee and going to cafe for coffee or tea was in middle of 50% to 55%. Adelaide's was also the same but both were just below 50% and buying fresh coffee was also just below 35%. Hobart's residents appeal for going to cafe for tea or coffee was the highest position shared with Melbourne at above 60%, close to 55% choose to purchase instant coffee and more than 35% resident prefer to buy fresh coffee.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that café visits were highest in most cities and that fresh coffee purchases were generally lowest, and you compare the cities with relevant figures. However, the overview is not fully accurate: fresh coffee was not the least popular category in every city, since in Adelaide café visits (about 49.5%) were below instant coffee purchases (50%), and in Sydney instant coffee slightly exceeded fresh coffee. Some details are also imprecise: Brisbane’s café figure was about 55.5%, rather than simply within the 50–55% range, and Melbourne’s café figure was about 63.5%. To strengthen the response, make the overview more carefully qualified and report the clearest highs, lows, and contrasts across all three categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and city-by-city detail. Comparisons such as “Compared to Sydney, Melbourne’s…” help connect the data, and the final paragraph groups Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear, however. The repeated “while” constructions do not always show a precise contrast, and “Brisbane’s residents were the least for buying fresh coffee” is difficult to follow. The overview also makes a broad claim before the details qualify it. Organise the body around the categories or the strongest city contrasts, and use explicit comparisons—for example, noting that café attendance peaked in Melbourne and Hobart while fresh coffee buying was lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “survey,” “purchase,” “residents,” and “shared,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “prefered to went,” “least favourite habbit,” “choose to go to a cafe for consuming,” and “appeal for going to cafe” do not describe survey results naturally. “Middle of 50% to 55%” is also an imprecise way to report a range. Use neutral reporting language rather than implying preference, such as “the proportion who visited a café,” and check spelling and word forms, including “preferred” and “habit.” More accurate collocations would make the comparisons clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “While” and comparisons introduced by “Compared to Sydney.” The main information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Overall, mostly every city prefered to went” has problems with quantifier choice, verb form, and tense; “Melbourne’s citizen around 65% went” lacks a clear grammatical subject; and “Hobart’s residents appeal … was” has an incorrect sentence structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “go to a cafe” and “more than 35% resident.” Aim for a clear subject–verb structure in each sentence, use past-tense reporting consistently, and proofread agreement, articles, and plural nouns.
