Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response makes a relevant attempt to introduce the chart and give an overview, but it addresses the task only minimally. The overview claims fresh coffee was the biggest result in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart; in fact, café visits were highest in all five cities, while fresh coffee was lower than instant coffee in each city. No accurate comparisons or supporting figures are reported, and Brisbane and Adelaide are not discussed. The response also contains only 48 words, well below the required 150, leaving the main features largely undeveloped. To improve, provide a clear overview of the dominant patterns, then compare the three categories across the cities using selected figures from the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first sentence introduces the chart, and “overall” signals that the second sentence is intended as an overview. This gives the reader a minimal sense of the response’s purpose. However, there is no developed progression from an introduction to an overview and supporting comparisons, because the response ends after two sentences. The comma after “overall” also needs a following space and consistent capitalisation. In a fuller response, use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, and connect related figures with clear links such as “by contrast” or “whereas”.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “proportion,” “survey,” and “fresh coffee,” so its general subject is identifiable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “results of a survey” is less precise than “survey findings,” and “purchasing and taking habits” does not clearly describe buying coffee or visiting cafés. “Rural residential areas” is also unsupported by the chart, which concerns five Australian cities. Spelling and apostrophe errors in “individuls” and “people`s” further reduce control. Use the chart’s own category labels where possible, and choose precise terms such as “residents,” “bought,” and “went to a café.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts two sentence forms: a chart-introduction statement and an overview beginning with “overall.” However, grammatical control is limited in these short sentences. “The bar chart illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement; it should be “The bar chart illustrates.” The phrase “bought fresh coffee in last four weeks was notable the biggest” lacks a clear grammatical structure and needs an article and a suitable construction, for example, “the proportion who bought fresh coffee in the last four weeks was highest.” Capitalise “Overall” at the start of the sentence and use a space after the comma. Building accurate simple sentences before adding more complex comparisons would improve clarity.
