Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern that café visits were generally the most popular activity and that instant coffee purchases exceeded fresh coffee purchases in every city. You also include relevant figures for fresh coffee and instant coffee, and your comparison of Adelaide correctly notes that café visits were slightly below instant coffee. However, the overview is not fully accurate: café visits were not the leading category in Adelaide, and the statement that they remained at the top in Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart overlooks that instant coffee was higher in Brisbane. The café figures are also reported selectively, with Melbourne given but the other cities not quantified. A more precise overview and fuller comparison of the café data would make the key features clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs comparing the categories. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information. However, the progression is weakened by some unclear or mechanically linked statements. For example, the overview says café visits were dominant across the cities, while the next paragraph qualifies this for Adelaide; the Brisbane comparison is also inconsistent with the data. The final paragraph repeats that instant coffee was above fresh coffee after this relationship has already appeared in the overview. Use clearer topic sentences and organise the details consistently—for example, compare café visits first, then contrast the two purchase types—while ensuring each linking phrase accurately reflects the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “bar graph,” “survey,” “peaked,” “preferred” and “approximately,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “remained dominant category.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “citizen’s” is not the right form for residents of several cities, “coffee or tea peaked” is imprecise for a percentage, and “fresh coffee was less purchased” is an awkward collocation. Spelling and capitalisation are inconsistent in “sydney” and “MElbourne,” and “later” should be “latter.” Choose precise reporting language such as “the proportion who visited a café” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “while” and the comparison beginning “in contrast.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening phrase “in last four weeks” needs an article, and “remained dominant category” is missing “the.” In “with nearly 65% residents preference,” the relationship between the percentage and residents is not grammatically formed. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, particularly the lowercase sentence openings “in” and “however,” and the run-on list in the final paragraph. Practise accurate noun phrases and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
