Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies a relevant overall pattern: café visits are generally the highest category, while fresh-coffee purchases are often lower. It also begins to report a specific figure for Hobart. However, the report is only a fragment and does not adequately summarise or compare the five cities and three categories; the sentence about increases and declines is also inaccurate because the chart compares cities, not changes over time. The Hobart comparison is left unfinished after “at”, so a key detail is missing. The response contains 92 words, below the required 150, which contributes to its very limited coverage. To improve, complete the report with a clear overview and accurate comparisons, including notable exceptions such as Adelaide, where café visits are not the highest.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening overview is followed by “To begin with” and a city-specific detail. This gives the reader some indication of the intended structure. However, the progression stops abruptly in the middle of the Hobart sentence, and there is no developed sequence covering the remaining cities or categories. The overview also repeats “people who…” rather than grouping the information more efficiently, while the link between the claimed trends and the chart is unclear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, and organise details by meaningful patterns—for example, café attendance versus coffee purchases. Complete each sentence and use linking phrases to show contrasts accurately.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “figures,” “category,” “highest,” and “approximately,” and the reader can recognise that it is describing survey results. However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings reduce clarity: “different trands” is unclear, “significant increase” and “declined over the period” suggest a time series that the chart does not show, and “people who bought fresh coffee is last 4 weeks” is difficult to interpret. Repeated use of “people who” also makes the description cumbersome. Aim for precise chart language such as “the proportion of residents,” “recorded,” and “compared with,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a longer sentence with a contrast between café visits and fresh-coffee purchases, and it uses a subordinate clause beginning “while.” However, the range remains limited, and errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to follow. For example, “people who bought fresh coffe is last 4 weeks remained the lowest” has an unclear grammatical structure and incorrect verb form, while “this was followed by … at” is left incomplete. Punctuation is also weak: the opening runs several ideas together without appropriate sentence boundaries. Practise complete comparative sentences, such as “In Hobart, café visits were highest, at about 63%, followed by instant-coffee purchases.” Check verb forms, articles, and sentence endings.
