Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify relevant features, including café visits being high in Melbourne and Hobart and fresh coffee being relatively low in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the overview is unclear and some comparisons misread the chart: Melbourne’s café figure is about 63.5%, not 65%; Hobart and Sydney are similar but not equal; and Adelaide’s fresh coffee is not equal to its instant coffee. The response also omits a clear comparison of the three categories across all five cities and does not fully summarise the main patterns. At 144 words, it is six words below the required minimum, which limits the development of the report. Add a concise, accurate overview and support it with selected comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a basic sequence: an opening statement followed by comments on Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. This gives the reader some sense of the cities being discussed, but the ideas are not arranged into a clear overview and supporting details. The second paragraph combines several cities and categories in long, difficult-to-follow sentences, while transitions between comparisons are limited. For example, the shift from Hobart and Sydney to Adelaide is abrupt, and the final sentence repeats the phrase “drinking habits” rather than clearly linking the figures. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key details, and group cities or categories logically so comparisons are easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “instant coffee,” “fresh coffee” and “cafe,” so the reader can generally identify the chart categories. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “drinking habits” for figures that include purchases and café visits, and “the people using the tea and coffee from cafe.” Spelling errors such as “descrbe,” “Melbouma,” “eeks” and “coffe” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Aim for accurate chart language and more natural collocations, such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café” or “bought instant coffee.” Check spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use basic present-tense reporting, but the range of structures is limited and errors occur frequently. Examples include “Melbouma has the highest percentage and adelaide has the lowest percentage in drinking habits,” where the comparison is not expressed clearly, and “the drinking habits for instant coffee is approximately 50%,” where the subject and verb do not agree. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “result of survey” and “60%-65%.Drinking.” These issues sometimes make relationships between figures difficult to understand. Practise accurate simple comparison structures first, then combine them with clauses using “while” or “whereas,” checking agreement, articles and punctuation.
