Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the findings of a research on purchasing and drinking habits of coffee and tea in last four weeks among five cities in Australia.

Overall, Sydney had the highest consumer of instant coffee, whereas Hobart had for raw coffee. In Melbourne, most of the people loved to choose a cafe for having either coffee or tea.

It is clear from the chart that, just under 45% of the citizens of Sydney purchased fresh coffee. On the other hand, Brisbane's and Adelaide's people were the lower consumer of it, just around 34% for both. In terms of instant coffee intake people of Hobart was on top, more than 50%. Surprisingly, due to high choice in raw coffee, only 45% citizen's of Sydney liked to buy instant one.

Moreover, almost people of all the cities among those went to a cafe for coffee or tea. The percentage of choosing cafe among all cities people was more than 60%, except Brisbane which was 55%. However, this tendancy was higher in the resident of Melbourne than others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the three activities and provide an overview, noting that café visits are popular and that instant coffee is especially common in Hobart. Several comparisons are relevant, including the lower fresh-coffee figures for Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: Sydney, not Hobart, has the highest fresh-coffee figure, and Melbourne, not Sydney, has the highest café attendance (slightly above Hobart). The statement that café attendance exceeded 60% in every city except Brisbane is also incorrect, since Adelaide is below 50%. These errors weaken the accuracy of the main features, while some figures and comparisons are only briefly developed. Check the highest and lowest values carefully and summarise the overall patterns more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the data. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” help signal shifts between points, and the reader can generally follow the comparisons. However, some connections are not fully logical or clear. For example, “due to high choice in raw coffee” does not clearly explain the comparison that follows, and the café paragraph groups the cities together before giving an inaccurate exception. The overview also moves abruptly between claims. Organise the details by activity or by clear high-to-low comparisons, and use linking phrases only where they accurately express the relationship between the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “purchased,” “percentage,” “consumer,” and “findings,” and the reader can understand the general subject. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “highest consumer,” “raw coffee,” “loved to choose a cafe,” and “choice in raw coffee.” These expressions sometimes make the intended comparison harder to interpret. “Tendancy” is also misspelled, and “almost people” is not an appropriate phrase for describing proportions. Aim for standard chart language such as “the highest proportion,” “fresh coffee,” and “the share of residents who visited a café.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and natural without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including contrast structures such as “whereas” and “On the other hand,” and most of the message remains understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “Hobart had for raw coffee” is incomplete, “people of Hobart was” has subject–verb disagreement, and “45% citizen's of Sydney” uses an incorrect plural form and possessive. The opening phrase “a research” also has an article problem, while punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Practise building accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Hobart had the highest proportion of residents buying instant coffee.” Greater control of these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining sentence variety.
