Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the outcomes of a survey about people's coffee and tea purchasing and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Overall, it can be observed at a glance that the chart demonstrates the comparision based on three distinct conditions that how individuals buy or drink coffee and tea such as bought fress coffee, bought instant coffee and went to a cafe for coffee or tea. The most dominent cities where people went to a cafe for coffee were Melbourne,Hobart and Sydney, followed by Brisbane and adelaide respectively. If we talk about buying fresh coffee, Sydney and Melbourne were dominent followed by other three cities hobart,Adelaide and Brisbane respectively. Moreover, for cities buying instant coffee, we see very low difference in percentage points.

Starting from the category of people who bought fress coffee, Sydney was the top city with almost 43% of residents who consumed fress coffee, then Melbourne with approximately 41%, Hobart with 38%, Adelaide with 34% and Brisbane with the lowest among others with approximately 33%. After that, a category of individuals who bought instant coffee, Hobart was the top city with 54%, then Brisbane at 52%, Adelaide with 50%, Melbourne with 47% and the lowest among was Sydney with 46%.

Finally, the last category which shows individuals' percentage of going to a cafe for coffee or tea, Melbourne was the top city with very close percentage points to Hobart with 64% and 63% respectively. After that, Sydney with 61% and Brisbane with 56%. At last a city with lowest percentage points was Adelaide with 49%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three survey categories and give a clear overview of the main patterns: café visits are highest in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney, while fresh coffee purchases are strongest in Sydney and Melbourne. The city rankings and figures are generally accurate, with only small differences from the approximate chart values. This provides relevant support across the response. However, the overview is somewhat repetitive and does not clearly state the broad contrast that café-going is the most popular activity in most cities, while fresh coffee buying is generally the least common. The claim that instant-coffee percentages show a “very low difference” is also vague; the range is wider than this wording suggests. A more selective overview of the key highs, lows and contrasts would make the report more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the three categories. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Starting from,” “After that” and “Finally” help guide the reader through the data. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. However, the overview repeats information that is then listed in detail, and the repeated sequencing phrases make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references are also imprecise, such as “the chart demonstrates the comparision based on three distinct conditions,” which does not clearly explain the relationship between the categories. To strengthen cohesion, group related comparisons more purposefully and use concise links that show contrasts, rather than relying mainly on “then” and “after that.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage points,” “residents,” “category” and “approximately,” and the reader can understand the comparisons. However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording such as “top city,” “lowest” and “category,” as well as several inaccurate or unnatural choices. For example, “dominant cities” is not suitable for describing the highest survey results, and “fress coffee” is misspelled repeatedly. “Comparision” and “adelaide” also show spelling and capitalisation problems. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Use standard reporting language such as “highest proportion,” “ranked first” and “purchased,” and check spelling and city-name capitalisation carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, and most of the data remains understandable. There are some grammatical errors, particularly in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “the chart demonstrates the comparision based on three distinct conditions that how individuals buy or drink” has an awkward, incomplete relationship between clauses; it would be clearer as “The chart compares three activities: buying fresh coffee, buying instant coffee, and visiting a café.” Commas are also missing after city names in lists, and spacing around punctuation is inconsistent, as in “Melbourne,Hobart.” The phrase “the lowest among was Sydney” is grammatically incomplete. Aim for cleaner sentence patterns and accurate punctuation, while retaining the useful range of structures you attempt.
