Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the survey topic and refer to all three activities, so the response is relevant to the chart. However, several comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: for example, fresh-coffee figures are not highest in Sydney and Melbourne compared with every other city, and the statement that café visits were lower in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart reverses the chart, where these cities have the highest proportions. The overview is also incomplete, and the final phrase, “In my opinion, the percentage,” does not communicate a finding. The response is below the required 150 words, which further limits the detail available. Select the main patterns accurately, give a clear overview, and support it with a few reliable figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

The response follows a basic sequence, moving from a general introduction to comments about coffee, café visits and instant coffee. Comparisons such as “Compared to Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart” show an attempt to connect information. However, the ideas are not organised into clear paragraphs, and several sentences are difficult to follow because the comparison being made is incomplete or contradictory. For instance, “the percentages of tea and coffee in the last four weeks” does not state what those percentages show. The final fragment interrupts the progression. Group the overview separately from the detailed comparisons, and use linking phrases only when the relationship between the figures is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “percentage,” “bought,” “instant coffee,” and “cafe,” and the meaning is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “in the last four weeks” and “a lower percentage.” “The map below” is also an inaccurate label for a bar chart, while “the percentages of tea and coffee” does not clearly describe café visits. Aim for more precise chart language and vary expressions for proportions and comparisons. For example, describe residents who “visited a café” and say that a figure was “higher” or “lower” than another, rather than using vague wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You produce several simple sentences that are understandable, such as “Many individuals bought coffee,” and you attempt longer comparative structures. However, sentence control is inconsistent. The fragment “In Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, the percentages of tea and coffee in the last four weeks” has no complete main clause, and the ending “In my opinion, the percentage” is also unfinished. Punctuation and spacing are uneven, including the missing space after the full stop in “weeks. In Sydney” and the comma spacing in “Melbourne, the.” Most sentences use a similar basic pattern. Practise writing complete clauses and combining them with accurate comparative structures before adding more complex forms.
