Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart illustrates the results of a survey about people's cofee and tea buying and drinking habits in five cities in Australia; Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.

According to chart in last 4 weeks, each city has a different ratio of city residents in order to buy fresh cofee, instant cofee and to go to a cafe for tea or cofee. Where 60-65% people are more interested from Sydney, Malbourne and Hobart to go to a cafe for cofee and tea. On the other hand, people of Adelaide and Brisbane have low porportion of people interested in cafes. But overall people are more active to go to cafe as compared to taking fresh and instant cofee.

As a comparison of fresh cofee and instant cofee, residents gave priority to instant cofee over fresh cofee.

Sydney has a highest number of people in order to take fresh cofee, while Brisbane has lowest ratio. Likely, Hobart has highest rank for dealing people for instatnt cofee with almost 55% ratio as compared to other cities of Australia.

In conclusion, every city has a different ratio of people's interest about tea and cofee.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s subject and cover all three activities, with a useful overview that café visits were generally more common than either type of coffee purchase. You also correctly note that instant coffee exceeded fresh coffee in every city, and that Hobart had the highest instant-coffee figure. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart are around 61–64% for café visits, while Brisbane is about 56% and Adelaide about 50%, so describing both Adelaide and Brisbane simply as having a low proportion loses useful distinctions. The claim that Sydney had the highest fresh-coffee figure is also incorrect; it was the highest, but only slightly above Melbourne. Develop the overview with clearer comparisons and report key figures accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a general comparison, supporting details and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps separate the overview from the city-specific points, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, and some links do not make the meaning clear. For example, “Where 60-65% people are more interested from Sydney, Malbourne and Hobart” is difficult to connect grammatically to the preceding sentence, while “As a comparison of fresh coffee and instant coffee” introduces a point without smoothly linking it to the overview. Organise the body around the main patterns—café visits, then fresh versus instant purchases—and use clearer sentence connections and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “survey,” “residents,” “ratio,” “priority” and “comparison,” so the reader can generally understand the topic and intended contrasts. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “more interested from,” “gave priority to instant coffee,” and “highest rank for dealing people.” Repeated use of “ratio,” “people” and “cofee” also reduces precision; the chart reports percentages of residents rather than ratios or levels of interest. Spelling errors such as “cofee,” “Malbourne” and “instatnt” are noticeable. Use accurate chart language such as “proportion,” “percentage,” “accounted for” and “visited a café,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and articles. For example, “According to chart” needs an article, and “Where 60-65% people are more interested…” is an incomplete or poorly formed clause. The phrase “Sydney has a highest number” also has an article error, while “people are more active to go to cafe” uses an awkward grammatical pattern. Punctuation in the opening list could also be integrated more smoothly. Build clearer complete sentences, for example: “Café visits were highest in Melbourne and Hobart, at approximately 63%.” Practising article use and clause structure would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied sentences.
