Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad pattern that café visits were popular and that fresh coffee purchases were generally lower, and you include several relevant comparisons, such as instant coffee being highest in Hobart and fresh coffee being below 35% in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the overview is imprecise: café attendance was not highest in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart alone, since Brisbane was also above 55%, while Adelaide was lower. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, including “in past few days” rather than the last four weeks, and the claim that almost 45% in Sydney bought both types does not distinguish the figures. A clearer overview and more accurate, selective comparisons would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to city-specific details, and contrast markers such as “But” and “In spite of this” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression within the final paragraph is difficult to follow: the discussion jumps from café visits to instant coffee, then fresh coffee, and back to Hobart’s instant-coffee figure. Grouping information by category—for example, comparing café attendance across cities before discussing purchases—would create a clearer sequence. Some linking is repetitive, and the long final paragraph would benefit from clearer sentence boundaries and more deliberate organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant terms, including “residents,” “instant coffee,” “fresh coffee” and “consumed,” so the reader can identify the main subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “outcomes of the consumption,” “society people,” “were got fresh coffee” and “were liked fresh coffee.” These expressions make parts of the report awkward or unclear. Use precise reporting language such as “the proportion of residents who bought,” “visited a café,” and “purchased fresh coffee.” Also keep the time reference consistent with the chart’s “last four weeks,” rather than substituting “past few days” or “last few weeks.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few longer structures, including “In spite of this” and sentences beginning “In Adelaide and Brisbane,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and errors occur frequently. Examples include “mostly they prefered to went,” where the verb form is faulty, and “Instant coffee were purchased,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. The sentence “In Brisbane, Hobart and Adelaide, more than 50% were bought instant coffee” also lacks a clear grammatical subject and uses an unsuitable passive construction. Articles, punctuation and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, as seen in the comma spacing and capitalisation of “sydney.” Practise accurate patterns such as “More than half of residents in Hobart bought instant coffee.”
