Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s main categories and make a useful overall comparison: café visits are generally the most popular activity, while fresh coffee purchases tend to be lower. You also report several figures close to the chart, including café visits in Melbourne and Hobart and instant coffee in Brisbane. However, the overview is too broad: fresh coffee is not the lowest activity in every city, and café visits are not the highest in Adelaide, where instant coffee is slightly higher. The fresh-coffee discussion gives only a general trend and no city figures, so this important series is under-reported. To strengthen the response, compare the categories accurately across cities and highlight key exceptions, especially Adelaide.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for café visits and coffee purchases. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes awkward, and several linking expressions do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. For example, “Whereas” begins a fragment after the overview, while “nevertheless” is used after the Adelaide figure without a clear contrast. The final paragraph also moves from instant coffee to fresh coffee abruptly. Grouping the data more consistently—for example, comparing all three activities city by city or discussing each activity in turn—and using simpler, more precise transitions would make the organisation clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary, including “substantially,” “gradual upward trend” and “registered,” and the reader can generally understand the topic and comparisons. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing survey data, such as “individuals beverages consuming items,” “ordered instant coffee” and “major considerable figures.” Spelling errors, including “recored,” “Adelainde” and “cofee,” also reduce precision. Some expressions are unnecessarily elaborate where a standard chart-reporting phrase would be clearer. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café” and “the figure rose to,” and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more reliable while retaining the range you are attempting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent, and faulty constructions sometimes make comparisons difficult to follow. For instance, “Overall, it is evident, the highest citizens were recored” lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “In Brisbane were 53% who bought instant coffee” has incorrect word order. The café paragraph also contains a long sentence beginning “in Sydney 60% of people…” that does not form a clear comparison. Articles, sentence boundaries and clause connections need more consistent control. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “In Sydney, 60% of residents visited a café,” then connect comparisons with accurate forms such as “whereas” or “compared with.”
