Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s main pattern: café visits are generally the most common activity, while fresh coffee purchases are usually lower than instant coffee purchases. You also report several relevant comparisons, including Hobart’s high instant-coffee figure and Sydney’s relatively high fresh-coffee figure. However, some data are substantially misreported: café visits in Brisbane and Adelaide were about 56% and 50%, not 5%, and Melbourne and Hobart were around 64%, rather than 65%. The overview and details are brief, and several comparisons are not clearly explained. The response is also 120 words, below the required 150; the 11 words copied from the prompt are excluded from this count. Develop the overview and report the figures more accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview, supporting details and a concluding summary. This helps the reader identify the topic and the broad comparison between café visits and coffee purchases. However, progression within the detail section is difficult to follow: café figures, instant coffee and fresh coffee are compressed into long, run-on passages, with few clear sentence boundaries. Linking is also limited, and phrases such as “inshort” do not create a clear transition. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and grouped data, and organise the details consistently by activity or by city. Clearer punctuation and linking expressions would make the comparisons easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the basic subject, including “cafe,” “instant coffee,” “fresh coffee,” “percentage” and “highest.” The repeated contrast between instant and fresh coffee is also relevant. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors are noticeable, including “bae,” “populer,” “aslo,” “brishbar” and “figur.” Some expressions are imprecise or awkward, such as “highest number” when describing percentages and “had around 5%” for the café data. Aim for accurate chart language such as “proportion,” “accounted for” and “stood at,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the activities and comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You communicate the general topic using mostly simple sentence patterns, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, for example, “overall, most people went to a cafe for coffee or tea.buying fresh coffee…” and “brisbane had around 5% and adelaide 5%.” This makes relationships between ideas unclear. There are also problems with sentence boundaries, capitalization and article use, while the response shows little variety beyond short statements and basic comparisons. Practise writing complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and use full stops and commas to separate each comparison. A wider range of accurately controlled structures would make the report easier to understand.
