Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify all three activities and make some relevant comparisons, including the general pattern that café visits are high and fresh-coffee purchases are lower in several cities. However, the response only partially summarises the chart: it gives no clear, accurate overview of the main contrasts across all five cities, and some figures or trends are misreported. For example, café attendance peaks at about 64% in Melbourne and 63% in Hobart, rather than rising to about 66%, while fresh coffee is lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide at roughly 34.5%. The final claim that café visits show an overall increase is not supported by a chart comparing cities, rather than change over time. Select the highest and lowest figures and compare the city patterns precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: it discusses fresh coffee, instant coffee and café visits, then gives a concluding overview. This helps the reader recognise the categories being compared. However, the progression is limited, and the ideas are compressed into one main paragraph with little separation between data description and overview. Linking phrases such as “First of all,” “While,” and “Overall” are used, but some connections are unclear; for instance, “Fluctuation seemed to occur to 51 and 49 percent” does not clearly identify which cities or explain the comparison. Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and two detail paragraphs, grouping related city figures and using clear references to each city.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ratio,” “increase,” “decline,” and “fluctuation,” and the reader can generally identify the activities being described. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. “Number of countries” is incorrect because the chart concerns residents in cities, and “buying ratio” is less natural than “proportion who bought.” Repetition of “increase” and “people” also limits precision. Use vocabulary that describes a cross-city comparison rather than a time trend, such as “the highest proportion,” “the lowest figure,” and “was more common than.” Check spelling and spacing, including “café” and the joined phrase “33and.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer sentence patterns, such as “While instant coffee buying ratio has been increased…” and “Overall an increase is seen…,” but these structures are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb form appear in “the ratio … have started” and “has been increased,” while articles and sentence construction are also inconsistent. The opening sentence, “The given chart depicts the number of countries buying and drinking coffee habits,” is difficult to parse because the grammatical relationships between its nouns are unclear. Punctuation and spacing problems, including missing spaces after full stops, further affect readability. Build more reliable simple comparison sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms when revising.
