Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview, noting that café visits are highest in Melbourne and Hobart and that fresh-coffee purchases are lowest in Adelaide. These are relevant main features. However, the report is only partially developed: the café figures for Melbourne and Hobart are both about 63%, but the response does not give Adelaide’s value or make a clear comparison across all three categories. The instant-coffee figures are also reversed: Hobart is about 54.5% and Brisbane about 53%, rather than 52% and 54%, respectively. The final discussion of fresh coffee is cut off, leaving the city comparisons incomplete. Select the key highs and lows accurately, then support the overview with a complete set of comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and body paragraphs, and phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast” and “On the other hand” show awareness of linking. However, progression is difficult to follow because the first body paragraph moves from café visits to instant coffee without a clear transition or consistent comparison. The overview sentence beginning “Whereas” is also awkwardly joined to the preceding idea, and the final paragraph ends mid-comparison, so the report does not reach a clear conclusion. Use one paragraph for the overview and separate body paragraphs for the chart categories, grouping cities in a consistent way. Ensure each paragraph develops a complete point and that linking words express the relationship between ideas accurately.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “residents” and “highest,” so the reader can recognise the intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the data harder to interpret. For example, “cafe attended by people” is an unnatural way to describe visiting cafés, while “instant coffee dranked” does not match the chart’s measure, which is buying instant coffee. There are also spelling errors such as “Melborne,” “Intially” and “inidividuals.” Use precise chart language consistently, distinguish buying from drinking, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “the drinks like coffee and tea is” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Melborne and Hobart has” also needs a plural verb. The opening overview fragment beginning “Whereas” is not joined into a complete sentence, while “the city with residents is study in percentage” has an unclear grammatical structure. Tense and number are also unstable in phrases such as “in last 4 week.” Build accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses only when their structure is secure. Check agreement, articles, plurals and sentence boundaries during revision.
